Gelb. He describes <strong><em>Curiosita<\/em><\/strong>, this first of seven Da Vincian Principles, as \u201can insatiably curious approach to life and an unrelenting quest for continuous learning.\u201d\u00a0 How fun is that?<\/p>\n<p>The experimental artist starts by asking a question: \u201cWhat would happen if\u2026..if I let these two inks merge\u2026.if I added washi paper here\u2026.if I collaged on some interesting shapes\u2026if I scrunched up plastic wrap and left it there until the painting dried?\u201d \u00a0The entire piece is created through inquiry.\u00a0 And it\u2019s one that doesn\u2019t stop after the painting is complete.\u00a0 You will see something different each time you look at it, if you\u2019re curious.<\/p>\n<p>Many times I\u2019ve tried to think in advance of what I want to paint.\u00a0 It really never comes to me until I start.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot like writing.\u00a0 If you just start writing, the ideas and characters show up.\u00a0 There is something to be said for doing sketches if you\u2019re trying to create something recognizable.\u00a0 Value studies are good to see if your piece is balanced.\u00a0 My value studies come from photos of the painting as I\u2019m working on it.\u00a0 I will switch the photo output to black and white to see if I have a preponderance of one value in an awkward place or whatever else might need tweaking.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_355\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-355\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artuitive.net\/blog\/2010\/09\/20\/353\/soulmate_watermark\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-355\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-355  \" title=\"Soulmate\" src=\"http:\/\/artuitive.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Soulmate_watermark-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artuitive.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Soulmate_watermark-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/www.artuitive.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Soulmate_watermark-138x150.jpg 138w, https:\/\/www.artuitive.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Soulmate_watermark-945x1024.jpg 945w, https:\/\/www.artuitive.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Soulmate_watermark.jpg 1251w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soulmate - Experimental Art, collage, acrylic ink, weaving<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Usually I will choose three colors of acrylic ink that will be interesting alone and in combination.\u00a0 For example, the colors of purple and yellow when run together, make a luscious brown that you can\u2019t get any other way.\u00a0 One of my favorite pieces \u201cSedona Sunset\u201d (shown at the top of this post) was an experiment to discover what would happen if I mixed turquoise blue ink with orangey red.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoulmate\u201d was also an experiment in color with blues and reds, so it comes off as purple. \u00a0This one I sketched out and carefully designed.\u00a0 When it was finished, I thought it was too structured, so I cut it into strips and wove it back together, collaging on some of the leftover pieces.\u00a0 Then I wove gold wire through it for a final touch.
