During the last several months my artist friend June Futamase and I have been going to Los Angeles area \u00a0galleries and events each weekend. Our adventures are planned\u00a0in blocks of 3\u00a0events or gallery visits per trip. This wasn\u2019t a requirement, just something that seemed reasonable since we each live more than\u00a050 miles away. Sometimes\u00a0it’s\u00a0comical how it works out.<\/p>\n

We attended\u00a0a local art fair in Newport Beach a couple weeks ago. It was to be followed by early dinner and then our reception at Showcase Gallery<\/i>. On our way through the restaurant\u2019s parking lot, we were bemoaning the fact that we didn\u2019t have that “third gallery thing” happening.\u00a0 Like magic just to our left was a fabulous gallery having a reception! After dinner, we attended and were able to count it in our 3-for-a-night tally!<\/p>\n

June and I have met amazing artists, gallerists, art dealers, journalists and made new friends on our jaunts. We are new\u00a0to the L.A. art scene and find ourselves delighted at the visual and emotional stimulation we encounter.<\/p>\n

Collage artist Launa Romoff advises us on the \u201cmust see\u201d and \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d about town. She\u2019s generous enough to drive us around so we just relax\u2026well, sort of. Imagine taking Laurel Canyon’ s winding steeps \u00a0(35 mph limit) at 60 with a reincarnated race car driver!<\/p>\n

June’s and my journeys\u00a0(one way) to destinations in L.A. usually take \u00a0 1 – 2\u00a0hours depending on the traffic. We alternate driving duties. Last Saturday we had a late-afternoon sushi dinner\u00a0and drove\u00a0to West Hollywood to my new Gallery 825<\/i> for the opening reception. Then off with Launa to the Brand Library Gallery<\/i> in Glendale for \u201cJoan Quinn Captured\u201d, followed by Liz\u2019s Loft<\/em>\u00a0event “Diverted Destruction” showcasing collage artist Tm Gratkowski. He is called Tim – just met him so not sure\u00a0why the missing “i” in his professional name — someday I’ll ask.<\/p>\n

Liz\u2019s Loft<\/em> gallery is over her hardware store – a potpourri of\u00a0everything global and vintage for the West Hollywood\/LA\u00a0 homeowner.<\/p>\n

Are you\u00a0wondering what I’m creating with all of this inspiration? How about\u00a0sales of\u00a0four paintings?\u00a0City Shadows, City Streets,<\/a> Golden Feather and Coming Full Circle<\/a><\/i>.\u00a0 City Litter<\/i> <\/a>won second place and a cash prize in \u201cArtists\u2019 Eye\u201d exhibition. The big City Runways<\/i> <\/a>paintings are in The Showcase Gallery<\/em> <\/a>through August 3rd\u00a0and are very much for sale. Please come take a look!<\/p>\n

City Litter Wins Prize!<\/p><\/div>\n

Several competitions have been entered – \u2019tis the season for this. Lots of entry fees and then the big wait to learn if a painting is accepted. It\u2019s a bit of a racket, but some shows are important places to show your work. Also attended \u201cHow to Get Gallery Representation\u201d sponsored by the LA Art Association. This is where I met Rob Grad <\/a>an amazing human being, artist and musician. Also serendipitously met the daughter of an old high school friend Steve Blume!<\/p>\n

My\u00a0Headache<\/em>\u00a0collage<\/a> was included in Ted Meyer’s postcards of “Pain” exhibition at UCLA’s LRC\u00a0Gallery – Geffen School of Medicine<\/a>.\u00a0Here I am with Ted at another event – his “Exploding Tattoos” party.<\/p>\n

Recently, I left the Studio Gallery<\/i>. It was a great experience, gave me a solo show and some wonderful introductions. Many thanks to Antoinette Sullivan for her friendship and kindnesses to me.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m painting and collaging at home for now – in 645 square feet.\u00a0How, you ask? My dining table – now my art table – is on 7\u201d risers so I can paint and collage flat and move around. The studio lights are on a side wall over the table and they work really great. I\u2019m surprised at how happy I am with this arrangement. Of course, I now have too much furniture and it\u2019s the wrong scale. But it\u2019s a small problem to be worked out over time.\u00a0I\u2019ve put my finished works in a temp-controlled storage unit. It has pretty good light just outside the door, so I put paintings on my easel to show them off. Just\u00a0sold a painting this way.<\/p>\n
